How do you sew or glue elastic onto fabric to make a curtain without a sewing machine?
I need to make a handmade “curtain” without a sewing machine by tomorrow morning (i.e. a few hours from now…:) The curtain is being used to hide a refrigerated display case. I’m planning on using velcro to attach the material to the case. However, it is in a restaurant and will need to be cleaned quite often. So i thought using elastic to gather the material at the top would create creases to help hide any stains at least a little bit. I have a glue gun, elastic, thread, and a needle. What do you suggest?! Help please!!
(Actually I know not to GLUE the elastic to the material, but rather i mean use the glue to create the horizontal “pocket” around the velcro.) They sell special glues for fabrics at fabric stores. Some of them claim to be sturdy enough for washings. Most of them dry quickly as well.

A few small but tight hand stitches would be good for reinforcement, and quick to do, just space them out as if you were putting buttons on. At the spot, make several small stitches through the Velcro and material, pull tight, tie off and cut, then move to the next one.

How to sew a curved line with a sewing machine?
I have been sewing straight lines for years- to make pillow cases, tote bags, etc.

Well, now I am trying to make my very first rag doll. Obviously, that requires sewing curved lines. My lines curves go all over the place- nothing smooth about them.

I am about to give up and try to sew the doll by hand.

But, before I do that can anybody tell me if there is some secret to learning how to sew a curved line?

What type of sewing machine do I need?
I have no experience sewing (we all start somewhere, right?), but I want to start making dresses. I’m prepared for lots of failure, and for maybe some success, but I need help. I don’t know anything about sewing machines. What kind of sewing machine will I need to sew dresses? I’m thinking about just plain old cotton based material. What kinds of sewing machines are there? What kind will be best for me?
Are there different models that do different things?
